Story Factor ~ Annette Simmons

“People don’t want more information. They are up to their eyeballs in information. They want faith—faith in you, your goals, your success, in the story you tell.”

~ Annette Simmons, The Story Factor: Inspiration, Influence, and Persuasion through the Art of Storytelling

The objective thinkers are looking for cold hard facts, bullet points, and numbers. They want to divide the world into right and wrong. They want to find the recipe that will always work. In truth, we all want to be objective thinkers.

However, only story can give facts meaning and context. Story can create emotion, and emotion is often more powerful than fact. The stories that we tell influence how we experience the facts.

Stories can hold paradox. While the numbers may tell you one thing, the stories can tell you another. Can we capture love in an objective recipe? Is there a formula that always works? Story makes the facts personal and helps us deal with uncertainty and ambiguity.

How can we find the balance between the objective analysis of the numbers and the subjective stories behind them? How can we use the art of storytelling to persuade, motivate, and inspire ourselves and others? How can we use the information available and find faith that we are doing the right thing for the right reasons?

Annette Simmons gives us the answer as “The Story Factor.”
