SLAM Storytelling comes to FGCU

The contestants are on stage pouring out their deeply personal moments to a riveted audience. The laughter roars. Touching moments move us. We are all connected by the intricate web the storyteller weaves in just five minutes. It’s a contest, and the winner goes home with the prize for the best story. The judges are on the edge of their seats. The scores are read. The audience hoots and hollers. Who will go home with the prize?

SLAM Storytelling is coming to Florida Gulf Coast University (FGCU).

The first in the series starts Wed, Sep 26, 2019, at 7pm – 8:30pm, outside Starbucks at the FGCU Library. 5 – 7 minute stories on the theme, “How I got here.” Storytellers must contact me prior to enter. Everyone welcome to attend. FREE event. Stay tuned for more events on Oct 11, Nov 14, Dec 5

SLAM Storytelling is adapted from the SLAM Poetry world of spoken word in a contest format. As another spoken word tradition, the performance art of storytelling is captivating and inspiring. The contest format just ups the excitement.

The Moth StorySLAM

The most well-known StorySLAM events are organized by “The Moth,” which is a non-profit that promotes storytelling. Every SLAM has different rules. At the Moth, stories must be 5 minutes or less, must include the theme, and must be true personal stories with a beginning, middle, and end.

Florida Storytelling Festival StorySLAM

Here in Florida, you can also find a StorySLAM at the Florida Storytelling Festival. The 4-day festival includes a SLAM competition on Saturday, January 26, 2019. Any type of story can enter, from personal stories to folk tales and anything in between. Must be family friendly. 5 minutes. Theme: “Friends and Family.” First place is $125. Contestants drawn at random as time allows.
