“Compassion does not mean pity… compassion means putting yourself in the position of another person, learning about their pain.”
~ Karen Armstrong
Using storytelling to bring polarized groups together is not about changing their minds so that they agree. In storytelling, we suspend disbelief and activate our imagination. Using storytelling to bring groups together is about opening our minds, suspending disbelief, and stepping into the story of another. When we listen to the personal experience of another, we connect through our shared humanity. We open our hearts. In the end, our minds still may not agree, but our hearts understand. We can hold a place of compassion. We can perhaps live together.
