In the pre-penicillin years of the 1930’s, medicine was simple… one person could know and do everything, but doctors could do very little. Now the complexity and the cost of medicine has exploded. How do we deal with complex systems?
In 2012, Atul Gawande proposed a breakthrough that changed medicine with a simple process.
- Identify the problem.
- Find a solution.
- Implement it.
The problem was surgical error. The solution was checklists. However, in order to implement the solution, the culture of medicine had to change from independence, self-sufficiency, and autonomy towards humility, discipline, and teamwork.
