Companies have mission statements to inspire them.
- Starbucks
“To inspire and nurture the human spirit—one person, one cup, and one neighborhood at a time.” - LEGO
“To inspire and develop the builders of tomorrow.” - Etsy
“To keep human connection at the heart of commerce.”
What’s your personal mission?
The mission statement is short and powerful, like a north star that you can return to over and over to inspire and guide you.
- A mission statement is not a long endless essay.
- A mission statement is not a goal that you accomplish.
- A mission statement is not an item on the “to do” list that you cross off.
- A mission statement is not a “one and done.”
By holding a mission statement in your mind and heart, you can live fully in the present moment and create the future that you want.
When the world feels off balance, I can return to my mission statement:
- Am I living my mission?
- Are my actions in alignment with my mission?
- What are the goals that I can set to move towards my mission?
But let’s back up a moment.
How do you write a personal mission statement?
I’ve been looking into several methods to share at the next annual Release and Renewal online workshop in January. Join me if you would like to craft your mission statement in an online community of like-minded folks and take it even further into a prayer and blessing to manifest your sacred mission in the New Year.
There are several methods to creating a personal mission statement that incorporates your values and identifies the gifts and talents that you have to give to your community and the world. Here is one way to think about the mission writing process.
A mission statement looks outward for how you can serve the world and looks inward for the gifts and talents that you have to offer in service to the vision of the world that you would like to create.
- What is the VISION of the world that you want to create?
- What are the GIFT(S) or talent(s) that you have to create this vision?
- What ACTION(S) will you take based on your gifts and talents to create this vision?
What’s my personal mission?
I am still in the process of refining my personal mission to find the words that resonate and will continue to inspire me. In this way, writing a mission is a continual process of refining and rewriting when the words lose their potency. Here’s today’s version:
VISION: a world that is healed
GIFTS: storytelling, teaching, doctoring
ACTION: healing
“To heal the world, one story at a time.”
