Coat of Many Colors ~ Dolly Parton

Dolly Parton grew up in a two-room house with her “momma and daddy” and 11 other siblings. In the backcountry of Tennessee, she will tell you that they had running water… they had to “run and get it.” From the poverty of her early life, you will find the riches of her songs that tell her story. And she tells everyone, “One is only poor, only if they choose to be.”

She started her Imagination Library non-profit to honor her father who didn’t learn to read and write. Her non-profit gives free books to children. She believes that if you can teach a child to read, you can teach them to dream, and if they can dream… anything is possible!

Listen to Dolly Parton’s original song taken from her life experience, written in 1969 on the back of someone else’s dry cleaning receipt and recorded in April 1971 to become number four on the U.S. country singles chart. From a box of rags to a coat of riches, Dolly is a master songwriter, storyteller, and singer. Dolly gives freely from the gifts of wisdom that she has collected across her life.
