Simon Sinek: Start with Why

“People don’t buy what you do; they buy why you do it.”
Simon Sinek

Many people can tell us WHAT they do; some can tell us HOW they do it; but fewer can answer the most important question of WHY they do it.

Do you want to motivate and inspire yourself and others? Simon Sinek tells us in his book, Start with Why: How Great Leaders Inspire Everyone to Take Action, and his TED talk below.

We are inspired by those organizations and individuals that can articulate WHY they do what they do. The WHY is the purpose that drives them into action. If that purpose is aligned with ours, then we will also be inspired into action.

One example of a company that does this well is Apple Computers in their advertising.

  • They could tell us WHAT: We make great computers. You should buy one.
  • They could tell us HOW: We use the best technology to create intuitive products that are easy to use. You should buy one.
  • Instead their advertising tells us WHY: Be an individual who uses a sleek and sexy product to stay connected. Join the community.  You should buy one.

We are not driven by facts and figures (WHAT and HOW), but by the story that creates an emotional impact (WHY).

Just like Apple, each of us must find that WHY in our own life—the driving purpose. Connecting to that purpose and drive will help us to find others connecting to that same purpose. This is how great leaders inspire action. Simon Sinek tells us the secret of great leaders is to “Start with Why.” Check out his book and TED talk below. Visit the website.
