Dr. Paul Jones is a Family Practice physician in Naples, Florida, and currently the President of the Medical Staff at Naples Community Hospital (NCH). He continues to work in both the office and hospital caring for his patients. In 2014, NCH awarded him the physician of the year award.

I recently met up with Dr. Jones at a Physician Wellness Group at NCH that he had organized in response to the increase awareness of physician burnout. While burnout has been a common topic in many fields, physician burnout has been an important topic in medical news, especially lately with the increased demands on physicians, higher rates of burnout, and shortage of physicians.

The simplest dictionary definition of “burnout” is physical or mental collapse from overwork and stress. However, burnout is more than simple fatigue and the need for vacation. Burnout is costing the nation as physicians drop out of practice early. Burnout shows up as emotional exhaustion, compassion fatigue, lack of connection, cynicism, detachment, loss of joy in life, depression, and feeling that “I’m not making a difference.”

In a society that is always on the “go … go … go …”, we are always doing something. In a prior blog on “Mindfulness in Medicine,” I wrote about how the practice of Mindfulness can give us the resilience to avoid burnout.

In this interview, Dr. Paul Jones gives us a candid view into the life of a doctor and how he has found the practical wisdom from his patients and from his experiences to keep him passionate about life.
